Subscribe to BirdCast Email Migration Alerts

Receive free BirdCast Migration Alerts by email from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on days when the migration forecast is high, plus updates about birds, birding, and opportunities to help conservation.

Expand the regions below to find a city near you.

We recommend subscribing only to the city nearest to you. Subscribing to multiple cities within the same state or region may result in many duplicate emails for the same large-scale migration events.

BirdCast Alert Regions for city email alerts. Alerts are available for limited cities in five regions in the contiguous US: the Northeast, Midwest, Southwest, Southeast, and West.
How were these cities selected?

Cities were selected such that anyone living in the contiguous United States can select a city that is relatively close to where they live. Cities are selected based on population size of their associated larger metropolitan area (using the populated places dataset of Natural Earth) and additional criteria to ensure an even distribution of cities over the country. As a result, the cities included for each state are not necessarily the state's largest ones.

My city is not listed, where should I sign up?

We recommend signing up to the city closest to where you live. Big waves of migration are often very large-scale and widespread. Therefore, alerts for a city within a 100 miles of where you live tend to be representative for your location as well.

Cities with email alerts are indicated in red dots. Email alerts can be used in the entire contiguous United States. We recommend subscribing to the nearest city to you.
Why are email alerts only available in the contiguous USA?

Currently BirdCast only uses data from the NEXRAD weather radar network, which primarily covers the territories of the United States. The primary reason we do not display data from Alaska and Hawaii is about the map graphics we use and the challenge of making a good, concise visualization. Read more about alert availibility here.

How do I change my email subscriptions or unsubscribe?

At the bottom of the alert emails and in the confirmation email of your subscription you will find a link "Manage preferences". Clicking that link allows you to change which cities you will receive alerts for within that BirdCast region only. There is also a "Unsubscribe from this list" link, which allows you to unsubscribe from all cities in a Alert Region (see region map above). If you subscribed to cities in more than one Alert Region, you will need to unsubscribe from each one, using the links at the bottom of the emails for each region.
