Regional Migration Forecast: 9-16 October 2015

Merlin, Luke Seitz
Continental Summary
While the favorable conditions in the West arrive during the middle of the period and bring light to moderate movement featuring Western Grebe, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck, Hermit Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, White-crowned Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco, the East experiences more favorable conditions for several waves of moderate to heavy flights featuring American White Pelican, Merlin, Wilson’s Snipe, Marsh Wren, Sedge Wren, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow.

Arrows show wind speed and direction (arrow points in the direction to which wind is blowing) 100 m above ground level. Areas with southerly winds are colored red; northerly winds colored blue. Accumulated precipitation (in 6 hour intervals) is green, outlined by white. Broadly speaking, areas of the map in blue will experience conditions that are favorable for migration, and areas where blue and green (and red and blue) intersect and overlap may experience migrant concentrations and fallouts as migrants interact with precipitation.

Upper Midwest and Northeast
The rapid passage of a low pressure system brings a pulse of moderate to heavy flights to kickoff the weekend, followed by a blast of warmer air that dampens the intensity of flights through Monday. But another strong frontal boundary moves across the region on Monday, bringing a new wave of moderate to heavy and locally very heavy flights. These flights are heaviest on Monday and Tuesday nights, followed by periods of continuing locally moderate to heavy flights through the remainder of the period. The distribution of these flights will depend heavily on precipitation and its extent and intensity; also, note that this time of the season frequently features large concentrations and fallouts of migrants when waves of birds aloft encounter precipitation and poor visibility conditions.

Gulf Coast and Southeast
Moderare to heavy weekend flights gradually decrease in intensity and extent through Monday, as the favorable weekend conditions give way to more southerly flow. However, Monday and Tuesday see the movement of a frontal boundary through the region, which will bring patterns similar to those occurring to the north of moderate to locally very heavy movements across the region. As the week continues, these flights will continue where favorable conditions persist but will become increasingly localized tower the end of the period.

Great Plains
A generally unfavorable weekend for migration will see locally moderate flights where conditions permit. Following this period of southerly flow, a pulse of cooler air and northerly winds arrive on Monday and with it comes moderate to very heavy flights across the region. These flights continue, albeit localized to the northern and central Plains, for Tuesday and Wednesday nights. An excellent diurnal flight is likely on Thursday, as favorable conditions prevail; but alas these do not continue into nocturnal periods, and nocturnal flights will not be as extensive as the earlier period movements.

West
An unfavorable start to the period gives way to much more favorable conditions by Monday, when light to moderate movements are likely from the Desert Southwest east and north along the Rockies. Some of the movements east of the Rockies may be locally heavy. While these favorable conditions persist in the Rockies and immediate environs, allowing similarly intense movements to continue, the remainder of the region experiences marginal conditions where primarily light movements will occur. By the end of the period, the entire region experiences similar marginal conditions at region wide extents, and light movements will be the norm. Note that some areas, particularly in the Four Corners and portions of the northern and central Rockies, will see more favorable conditions and more intense, primarily moderate, movements.
