BirdCast records another billion bird night!
The fourth billion bird night in our records and the first (and only?) for Fall 2026

In fall 2023 and 2025 BirdCast live maps showcased our three biggest nights ever – 6 October 2023, 25 September and 8 October 2025 – with over a billion birds on each of these amazing nights. Now, we can add one more billion bird night to the record books! At 10:40 ET, the number of birds in flight over the contiguous U.S. topped out at 1.0318 billion birds. This epic flight was concentrated in Texas and the central and lower Mississippi River valley.

The areas of the most intense flights (for example, over Mississippi) corresponded to areas of highly favorable atmospheric conditions. During the late afternoon and evening of 16 October 2026, a strong autumn cold front, represented on the surface analysis map above by a blue line with blue triangles, swept southeastward across the contiguous United States, accompanied by a deepening low-pressure system tracking from the Great Lakes toward the Northeast and an expansive area of cooler, drier high pressure advancing across the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley. Behind the front, and by the time of image above, that front had move east over the Appalachians, clearing the way for widespread northerly to northwesterly winds, falling temperatures (some of, if not, the coolest this fall), and improving conditions in its wake across much of the central and southern United States.
